SARM Property Self-Insurance Program

Delegates to SARM's 2001 Annual Convention directed the association to investigate the feasibility of a property insurance program for its members. As a result, in 2002, SARM facilitated a group insurance plan through the brokerage firm Aon Reed Stenhouse Inc.

In mid-2002, the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities Act was amended to allow the association to establish and administer a self-insurance program. On
January 1, 2003, the SARM Property Self-Insurance Program launched and the brokered group insurance program ended.

Over the years, the program has grown in terms of both funds held in reserve and participation (which is voluntary). From 134 participants in 2003, the program has grown to include 210 participants at December 31, 2012.
