Municipalities must protect the physical property and equipment that they own. For the year 2002, SARM provided property insurance to 135 rural municipalities by way of a group property insurance program through the insurance brokerage firm of AON Reed Stenhouse. A number of municipalities had indicated that they would like to participate if the plan was self-insured like the liability insurance plan, so work then began on developing a self-insured program.
In June of 2002, the SARM Act of Incorporation was amended to enable SARM to provide property insurance to its members. The SARM Property Self-Insurance Program took effect on December 31, 2002, with 134 rural municipalities participating. There are now 205 rural municipalities participating in their own property insurance program.
