Saskatchewan Municipal Awards

Established in 2006, the Saskatchewan Municipal Awards (SMA) celebrate the excellent and innovative practices of Saskatchewan's municipal governments.

The awards showcase municipal practices that demonstrate:

  • good governance;
  • effective management;
  • consistent public engagement;
  • innovation;
  • significance;
  • transferability;
  • sustainability; and
  • capacity building.

The SMA program also aims to promote the successes of Saskatchewan's municipal sector to all of Saskatchewan.

2012 Award Categories

 □ Municipal Innovation and Service Excellence
Any innovative practice that enhances the construction or operation of sustainable municipal infrastructure and/or the ability to deliver municipal services that exceeds the expectations of its customers.

Community Life Enrichment
Any municipal practice that demonstrates leadership and continuous improvement by a municipality in enhancing and enriching the quality of life in the community. This is done through advocacy, enabling, support, and provision of diverse and inclusive recreation, active living programs, and facilities, attractive parks and open spaces, and collaborative efforts in socializing citizens.

Economic Development Leadership
Any municipal practice that demonstrates the municipal corporation's use of strategies to improve the local economic development climate while supporting long-term economic development in Saskatchewan.

Environmental Stewardship
Any municipal practice that demonstrates the municipal corporation's work as a steward of the environment, or the municipal corporation's efforts to encourage environmental sustainability within their community.

Regional Leadership and Partnerships
Any municipal practice that exemplifies efforts to consult and cooperate with other municipalities, non-governmental organizations, community groups, First Nations, other governments, and citizens for the purpose of delivering benefits to citizens.

Heritage Conservation Leadership
Any municipal practice that demonstrates the municipal corporation's work as a steward of heritage, or the municipal corporation's efforts to encourage heritage conservation within their community.

October 2011 - Launch of the 2012 program, 2012 nominations open
March 21, 2012 - Nomination deadline for 2012 program
May 11, 2012- Winners announced, Awards luncheon held in Regina
June, 2012 - Winning Submissions posted online
