Jim completed his schooling at Sturgis Composite High School and went on to the University of Saskatchewan where he spent two years in the College of Education and received his Standard ‘A' Teaching Certificate.  He has been farming, for the most part, since 1957 and now runs a grain and livestock operation with his son.  From 1962 until 1965, he taught school in the Canora School Unit.  While maintaining a partnership in the farm, Jim moved to Bellingham, Washington where he was employed by Intalco Aluminum Corporation.  He was quite successful in this endeavour, having started by working in production and leaving the organization, 1983, as Supervisor of Plant Services. Throughout his tenure with Intalco he completed numerous industry sponsored courses in the field of management, motivation and interpersonal skills.

His involvement in local government began when he was elected to his local RM council.  In 1994, he was elected to the Board of Directors of SARM and in 2006, he was elected Vice-President.  Jim is an active participant and leader in community affairs.  Together with his local government and farm operation responsibilities, Jim has found time to be Board Chairperson for the Canora Gateway Lodge, and to chair sub-committees of the Assiniboine Valley Health District.  He is a member of the Regional Services Advisory Committee to the Yorkton Union Hospital Board and of the Sturgis and District Rural Firefighters Board.

Jim's major responsibilities at SARM are in the area of agriculture and he has been named to the Board of Directors of the Canada Grains Council.
